Over the years I've read several books from the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. They're always so uplifting and leave me with a feel good feeling afterward. Most recently I was given the opportunity to read one of the newest additions to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, The Story behind the Song. This book was a bit different than the other titles I've read in the series and I LOVED it! Music has always been important to me. It's been a great escape during good times and bad. I've played several instruments over the years and just feel a connection to the music I listen to. The Story behind the Song isn't necessary a collection of uplifting stories, but is a collection of stories written by the authors of some of the most popular songs over several decades about how their song came to be.
I found it very interesting to find out how some of my favorite songs came about like "Father of Mine" by Art Alexakis, performed by his band Everclear. I remember listening to that song over and over and over again when I was dealing with my own father leaving. Other songs that have touched me or I've just really enjoyed at various times that are included in The Story behind the Song include "Hands" by Jewel, "Bohemian Rhapsody" written by Freddie Mercury and recorded by Queen (story by Roy Thomas Baker), "Hey There Delilah" by Tom Higgenson and recorded by Plain White T's and so many more. There are songs included that were sung by greats like Frank Sinatra and newer songs performed by Kenye West, John Legend and more.
I would definitely recommend this book to any music lover with a sense of curiosity about the music they love. And THREE lucky Red Sox Mommy readers have the opportunity to win a copy of The Story behind the Song to enjoy. To enter just leave a comment telling me your favorite song.

The Replacements and The Kinks are my favorite bands, I also love Big Star but the song I'm thinking about right now is Velvet Underground's Sweet Jane (Cowboy Junkies have a nice version). I love this song, I love lines like, "and me, I'm in a rock and roll band. Huh!" But the end is my favorite, "but anyone who ever had a heart/oh they wouldn't turn around and break it/and anyone who's ever played a part/oh, they wouldn't turn around and hate it." To me that's as good any prayer, and it often brings a tear to my silly blue eyes. Long answer yeah, but that song...
OK, asking me to pick my favorite song is impossible, so I will give you ONE of my favorite songs :)(I love music too much to have an all time fave...I can't even pick one favorite Christmas song...LOL)
Somebody by Depeche Mode..the first time I heard this song when I was a freshman in highschool at a church dance I was in love! Seriously, it is a great song about love! It was my hubby and I's first song at our wedding.
