I've always been interested in music. In fact, in high school I found my identity through music. It was a large school, as such it was too easy to get lost and not know where you fit in. When I went to college, a ginormous private university, I would run into people I only knew by face, not name, from high school and they'd say things like, "you're that flute girl, aren't you?" Sure, maybe being proud of my band nerd status isn't cool, but when I was playing one of my many instruments or hanging out with my other band nerd friends I fit in. Still to this day I feel at home around music, although I no longer play (I would totally play piano again if I could afford one, sigh).
The music performed by Celtic Woman is just the kind of music to make me feel at home. I can appreciate not just the skill of the singers themselves, but the skill of all their background musicians playing all sorts of instruments from bagpipes to string instruments. I recently received their newest album, Songs from the Heart. This cd was full of powerful voices and song that was mood changing. Seriously, just yesterday I was in a terrible, no good, horrible mood. I had a meeting for church and arrived early. This cd was in my car and as I sat their waiting and listening to it my mood softened. By the time the meeting started I'm sure the others there had no idea that not even an hour earlier I'd been a first class grump!
Quite honestly, until I received this cd I had never heard Celtic Woman. But apparently I've been living under a rock because they have received recognition all over the globe, they have sold more than 3.8 million records in the US alone and even had seven sold-out US Tours! If you're a Dancing with the Stars fan (yeah, about that living under a rock thing...I've never seen this show) you've likely seen them perform.
Celtic Woman consists of vocalists Lisa Kelly, Chole Agnew, Lynn Hilary and Alex Sharpe along with violinist Mairead Nesbitt. They have a unique blend of traditional Irish sound with modern classics like Fields of Gold and Goodnight My Angel. And their version of Amazing Grace is sure to give you chills, I know it did for me.
Songs from the Heart is available from EMI Music/Manhattan Records and if you're interested in catching them live you can check their tour dates or check your local listings for an upcoming PBS special.
