***NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE***The “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books are just as comfortable as, say, a real bowl of chicken soup. They are predictable, reliable and designed to warm the reader. “Thanks, Dad,” a Chicken Soup bowl stays with the pattern. Regardless of what father experience someone has had, there is likely at least one tale among the 101 that is relatable. Often the stories are sweet to the point of saccharine, but that didn’t bother me, I'm kind of a sucker for stuff like that.
Olympic skater Scott Hamilton wrote the introduction, and it is one of the most authentic and moving tales in the book. As a sickly child, his dedicated adoptive parents did everything to help him, and after he discovered his passion of skating, he began to recover. Later he had cancer, recovered. But retained issues with fertility. As he talks about his miracle second son, his joy is apparent. Other sections have insightful looks into how fathers relate their love, how they provide life lessons, how they serve as rescuers, how they provide solid security and how some men become truly heroic fathers. It isn’t great literature, but it’s not meant to be. It’s a small pleasure and it can warm the soul.

My dad always took his three girls fishing. No matter how many times he had to get our hook out of the nearest tree, he never lost his cool. I still love to fish.
